...by universal influence, and within that influence is sustained the knowledge held in the mixing of regular and general principles. Because any proper species, with no [outside] mixture, possesses its own proper greatness appropriated to itself under the logic of creation quadripartite operation?.
Duration is the property through which goodness, greatness, property, etc., endure against [the passage of] time. original: "contra annum"; likely referring to the temporal limits of a year or the corruption of time. Duration is the drawing forth of the durable and the enduring, which are of its very essence; in duration, they are planted, sustained, and guarded. That which makes good and that which makes great—and their actions—are able to endure; they are planted, sustained, and guarded within the durable. That which is capable of being made good and capable of being made great original: "bonificabile magnificabile"; Llull uses these terms to describe the passive capacity of a thing to receive goodness or greatness. are so held so that their suffering In a philosophical sense, "suffering" (passio) means the capacity to be acted upon by another force. might be able to endure. The same follows for "making good" and "making great," etc., which are habituated and accustomed to endure within that in which they persist. To endure is to flow from duration or from the durable; for if any part of the universal influence should cease, the particular parts would not cease, yet these would not be able to endure and would immediately proceed toward further corruption. The intention for which Duration is placed in this Art is so that, within it, [practitioners] may investigate not [only] through what things they endure; an artist The "Artist" is the practitioner of Llull's Art. can perform this investigation by following the definition and explanation of the general aspects of duration, according to what we have said, by mixing any one principle into another, preserving the manner according to which any principle endures in another under the logic of universal duration.
Power is that through which goodness, greatness, and the present moment are able to exist and act. Power is that by reason of which goodness can be that which it is, and can act as it acts under the logic of goodness. And "property" is that through which it is possible to be good and great; for this reason, power is that through which a substance Latin: "suba," abbreviation for "substantia." can be that which it is, and through which these sustained parts can exist within it. And it can operate actively and passively from them and by reason of them, and can be the subject of many "passions" Again, "passions" refers to ways a thing is acted upon or modified.. Power is, therefore, a universal principle under its own proper logic for all the properties of the species of other principles, into which it imprints its likeness. This likeness is diffused in the special properties sustained passively in other principles, and actively in the general property. And because multiplication occurs within the principles, there are many active properties appropriated to the principles of substance; because of this, there is an active and passive "being able" original: "posse"; the sheer capacity or potential to be. in goodness, in which there is an active power through which it can act.
