Influencing this according to its own sequence, he thus wishes the locations to signify things far apart from one another. And he spoke of the Parthian The Parthian Empire was located in modern-day Iran/Iraq in relation to the proximity of the Arar The Saône river in France and the German in relation to the Tigris, implying that they would meet each other [only through an impossibility], not having been separated by the benefit of a restoration of fields original: "resarīo beneficio"; likely referring to the land redistributions mentioned earlier in the poem.
Or this is the sense: he puts forth [these things] equally and in common, for they almost simultaneously swap their own regions and places and rivers. They rush in because they later restore us... the common people have... that is schismatic... original: "habatius"; possibly a corruption of a name or term for a common dialect to go to Albinus.
Africans.
Libya.
Wandering from here, he asserts both [concerning] the rivers from Assyria and Libya, which are submerged by water. He says these things here: Scythia is a northern region, and the heat of the stones original: "lapidum cocta"; perhaps referring to the parched earth or the "baked" nature of the landscape sustains the capture, because it is seized by "baked chalk" that is a small white [stone].
Oaxes.
Mesopotamia.
He spoke of the Oaxes A river mentioned in Eclogue 1.65; its location was debated by ancient commentators. For he sees the Oaxes as a river of Mesopotamia by its own will, since it flows rapidly, snatching up white [silt].
Scythia.
Oaxes.
Apollo
Antilene.
It is made turbulent; or he writes of the river Oaxes—the Oaxes is not in the island of Crete, but the water is of a certain color... The text here is fragmentary, discussing conflicting views on whether the Oaxes is in Crete or Mesopotamia either by Apollo or Antilene. And that [point] to take from here: that a town captured in Crete was returned, which by its own name... or those great births of Mytilene A city on the island of Lesbos brought forth by pain and groaning... to pour out rapid palms with pain.
Britain.
Britain is mentioned first; he snatches away the "divided" ones because Britain was once joined to the world. For it is an island situated in the northern ocean and separated from the rest of the world. Regarding this, some [read] "En hunc" likely a corruption of the Latin "En umquam," "Behold, shall I ever..." from Eclogue 1.67, or in another place he divided it by interposition, as below in this book: "En con hunc" referring to the verse: "En erit umquam ille dies," "Behold, will that day ever be?" which was a vice, as some say. A cottage term: Tugurium (a small hut or cottage) is so called from "covering" [tegendo]. Caesar [says] that earth torn up with its own grass... Thatch original: "Culmū" because it is covered with stalks original: "culmis".
