The Eleusinian Mysteries were the most famous secret religious rites of ancient Greece. They were held annually in honor of the goddesses Demeter and Persephone.
Demeter: The Greek goddess of agriculture, grain, and the harvest.
Persephone: The daughter of Demeter and queen of the underworld; her return to the surface each year represented the return of spring.
