Likewise, their original: "leur", used as the plural possessive pronoun, seems indeed to be a form consciously adopted by Descartes instead of the standard leurs. In one isolated case, conversely, although we printed the greatest part original: "la plus grande part", we must nevertheless consider it possible that Descartes—following an elision consistent with a more or less common pronunciation—voluntarily wrote la plus grand part, omitting the apostrophe to which he usually paid no attention.

We can therefore only state one thing: having taken responsibility for the text—one of us for the Discourse on Method, the other for the Essays—we have each done our best to maintain a middle ground between the tendencies toward overly rigorous systematization or overly servile fidelity. Some errors escaped us before final correction or occurred during the tierçage The "tierçage" refers to the third and often final round of proofreading in the printing process..
