An ornate, engraved bookplate for the University of Michigan Library. The design is enclosed in a decorative rectangular border with classical motifs. At the top, a small central crest contains the date "1837" and a ribbon with the word "VERITAS," flanked by the words "ARTES" to the left and "SCIENTIA" to the right. Below this, the primary text "LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN" is displayed in a serif font. The center of the plate features the Great Seal of the State of Michigan, which depicts an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, a shield held by an elk and a moose, and a man on a peninsula. Latin mottos are included on ribbons above and below the seal and within the shield itself. The bottom of the plate features a blank rectangular panel intended for handwritten or printed shelf marks or donor information, framed by decorative swags and foliage.
