To make all philosophy both certain and useful to the State original: "Reip." or "Respublica," referring to the common good or the organized state and to the whole human race: that is what I am doing. Therefore, after I set forth the method by which alone this can be done, I first had to seek the seeds from which those tall trees might joyfully grow forth, destined to produce fruits so beneficial to the State and to the whole human race. The principles of solid doctrine, which are the seeds of truths, experience the same fate as physical seeds. For just as seeds have no resemblance at all to the trees which grow from them, nor are the fruits expected from the tree visible in the seed; so similarly the principles of doctrine have no likeness—
