The "Orphica" refers to a collection of ancient Greek poems and hymns traditionally attributed to the mythical singer Orpheus, though actually composed by various authors over several centuries.
These names represent a "who's who" of classical scholarship from the 16th to the 18th centuries: Henri Estienne (Stephanus), Andreas Christian Eschenbach, Johann Matthias Gesner, and Thomas Tyrwhitt.
Gottfried Hermann (1772–1848) was a preeminent German philologist known for his rigorous approach to Greek meter and grammar.
The original date was printed in Roman numerals: CIƆIƆCCCV.
