the science of music.¹ original: "saṅgītāgamasanavidbhirakhilaiḥ sārdhaṃ vicārya sphuṭam" — verse 9 from the start of his commentary, meaning "having clearly discussed with all those who know the essence of the musical tradition." He adds that he has studied all the subjects also.² original: "vidyājātaviśāradaḥ" — meaning "an expert in the various branches of knowledge." But he has written other works which are now available in print.

A great AlaṅkāraA branch of Sanskrit literature focusing on poetics, rhetoric, and the aesthetics of literature work called Rasārṇavasudhākara The Moon-nectar of the Ocean of Sentiment by Siṁhabhūpāla has been published in the Trivandrum Sanskrit Series by the late MahāmahopādhyāyaA prestigious honorary title for eminent scholars, literally meaning "The Great Great Teacher" Dr. T. Ganapati Sastri as No. 50 in 1916. Here there is a long introductory portion³ verses 1-44 where the author gives much information about himself. There is the caste born of the feet of Viṣṇu the Śūdra caste, described in traditional Vedic cosmology as emerging from the feet of the cosmic being.⁴ original: "tasya (viṣṇoḥ) pādāmbujājjāto varṇaḥ" — "the caste born from the lotus-feet of him (Vishnu)." Belonging to that caste there is the dynasty of Recalla Recherla where there was the king named Dacana.⁵ original: "tatra recalla-vaṃśāndhi-śaradrākā-sudhākaraḥ | kalānidhir-udāraśrīr-āsīd dācana-nāyakaḥ ||" — "In that place lived the leader Dacana, who was like a full moon in the autumn sky over the ocean of the Recherla dynasty, a treasure-house of the arts and possessed of noble splendor." The name of the dynasty is Recerla and the double 'll' in the printed edition is likely a typo for 'rlla'. He defeated the Pāṇḍya king,⁶ original: "yasyāsidhārāmāgeṇa durgeṇāpi raṇāṅgaṇe | pāṇḍyarājakanyākāñ-jayalakṣmīrupāgatā ||" — "On the battlefield, the Goddess of Victory came to him—as if she were the daughter of the Pandya king—by way of the difficult path of his sword's edge." and he had the Title of Khaḍga-nārāyaṇa The Sword-Narayana, equating the king's prowess with the deity Vishnu/Narayana.⁷ original: "khaḍganārāyaṇe yasmin" — "in whom [there was the title] Sword-Narayana." His wife was Vocamāmbā⁸ original: "tasya bhāryā mahābhāgyā . . . vocamāmbā guṇodārā" — "His wife was of great fortune . . . Vocamamba, noble in virtues." who belonged to the Tāmarasa Lotus dynasty.⁹ original: "jātā tāmarasanvayāt" — "Born of the Tamarasa (Lotus) lineage." They had three sons,¹⁰ original: "tayorabhavan . . . putrāstrayaḥ" — "To them were born . . . three sons."
