After that, Colum Cille Saint Columba protected the poets and said to King Aed:
Following this, the billeting original: coindmed; the legal right to food and lodging of the poets was organized throughout Ireland, and their retinues were reduced: twenty-four men in the retinue of an Ollamh the highest rank of poet and twelve in the retinue of an Anrad the second-highest rank of poet.
It was after this that Colum Cille requested the release of Scandlán Scandlán Mór, Prince of Ossory from Aed, but it was not granted to him. Colum Cille then told Aed that Scandlán would be the one to unbuckle his sandals for him at the time of Matins the early morning prayer service, wherever he might be; and so it was fulfilled. Furthermore, it was Colmán, son of Comgellán, who delivered the judgment between the men of Ireland and the men of Scotland original: Alba regarding the Dál Riata a kingdom spanning northeastern Ireland and western Scotland. Colum Cille had shown great affection for Colmán when he was a small child, saying:
And Colum Cille declared that Colmán would be the one to make the settlement between the men of Ireland and Scotland. This was the judgment he gave: "Their expedition and their hosting military service shall be with the men of Ireland," because hosting always follows the land; "but their tribute and their tax shall be with the men of Scotland." Or, as some say: "Their naval fleet alone belongs to the men of Scotland, but everything else from that point on belongs to the men of Ireland."
