THE FORT OF ESA original: RATH ESA
These are the four tasks
that Eochaid Airem chose,
55
with many distinct companies of men,
with a multitude of shields and swords.
A causeway over the bog of Lámraige,
clearing forests over Brefne modern: Breifne, an ancient territory in north-central Ireland with fierce effort,
removing stones from Great Meath,
60
and spreading rushes over Tebtha modern: Teffia, a territory comprising parts of modern Westmeath and Longford.
“O daughter who has summoned me,”
said Eochaid, “tell me now
which landmark among my fortresses
shall be granted to you by me.”
65
Then it was that she chose
the Fort of Esa original: Ráith n-Ésa, a wall against a fair field,
a seat from which she might be ennobled original: asnasoerad-si; interpreted as a place of privilege or freedom,
where she might see three specific landmarks:
The Fairy Mound of the Brug original: Síd in Broga; the great Neolithic passage tomb now known as Newgrange of the many roads,
70
the third landmark, a fair hundred-fold place,
the Mound of the Hostages original: Duma nGiall; a famous prehistoric tomb at the Hill of Tara in this Tara,
and the fair Fort of Crimthann in Howth original: Dún cáin Crimthaind i n-Étar.
Then she was granted it
by Eochaid—a promise without deceit—
75
along with everything else she asked for,
with many of her treasures there.
Midir, after a period of time,
returned for that bold meeting
to Eochaid again,
80
regarding that same righteous cause.
