This photograph shows the fore-edge fore-edge: the outer edge of a book's pages, located opposite the spine of a closed, thick manuscript volume manuscript volume: a historical book, here referring to the bound printed text. The text block consists of numerous pages with darkened, slightly irregular edges.
The binding binding: the protective cover and construction that holds the pages of a book together is visible at the top and bottom. It is made of a dark material with traces of marbled paper marbling: a decorative technique where paper is dipped in a tray of colored liquids to create a stone-like pattern in red and blue. A small white paper slip or bookmark is tucked between the pages and protrudes from the top edge of the volume.
