A woodcut or engraved emblem centered on the upper portion of a flyleaf. The emblem is contained within a square frame and consists of a circular border with quatrefoil quatrefoil: a decorative framework consisting of four lobes or leaves indentations. Around the perimeter of the circle is the Dutch motto "DOOR STERKHEID FIER" original: "Proud through strength". Inside the quatrefoil, letters are arranged in a cross formation: a central "S" is flanked horizontally by the letter groups "DF" and "FD", and vertically by "F" and "D" both above and below. Small decorative floral rosettes fill the spaces between the letters and the border.
original: "Door sterkheid fier". This Dutch motto translates to "Proud through strength" or "Resolute through fortitude." In the original layout, the Dutch word "Sterkheid" (strength) is divided between the second and third lines.
These letters are the initials of the motto: D stands for "Door" (Through), S for "Sterkheid" (Strength), and F for "Fier" (Proud or Resolute).
