...to serve the interpretation. And we told him, signifies the perception that came from it. And he interpreted our dreams for us, signifies what was contained within those things foreseen in obscurity. To each according to his dream he interpreted, signifies interpretation based on the truth. And it happened just as he interpreted for us, signifies that it would turn out exactly so. Me he restored to my station, signifies that the sensory part of the intellectual side was received back. And him he hanged, signifies that the sensory part of the voluntary side The "voluntary side" refers to the part of the mind related to the will or desires. was rejected.
5227. And the chief butler spoke with Pharaoh. This signifies thought arising from the sensory part that is subject to the intellectual part. This is established from the meaning of "speaking," which is to think (as discussed in nos. 2271, 2287, 2619); and from the representation of the "chief butler," which is the sensory part subject to the intellectual part (as discussed in nos. 5077, 5082). For what "thought from the sensory part" means, see no. 5141.
5228. Saying. This signifies perception from that source. This is established from the meaning of "saying," which is to perceive (as discussed in nos. 1791, 1815, 1819, 1822, 1898, 1919, 2080, 2619, 2862, 3509, 3395). What "perception from that source," or "perception from thought," means cannot be easily explained to the understanding, because today it is completely unknown what spiritual perception is. Whatever is unknown does not enter into the senses, no matter how it is described. For perception is nothing other than the speech or thought of the angels who are present with a person; when that speech or thought flows in, it becomes a perception that "it is so" or "it is not so." This does not happen with anyone except those who are in the "good of love and charity" A state of being motivated by genuine love for God and others., for the perception flows in through what is good. Among those people, that perception produces thoughts, for their power of perception is the common ground for their thinking. However, "perception from thought" does not actually exist in reality, but only in appearance. No more can be said of this secret because, as stated, it is unknown today what perception is.
5229. I remember my sins today. This signifies a state of disjunction A state of being disconnected or separated.. This is clear from the meaning of "sins," which are things of an inverted order original: "inversi ordinis" — things that are out of spiritual alignment or "backward" compared to heavenly order (see no. 5076); and from the meaning of "remembering," which is conjunction (see no. 5169). Thus, to "remember sins" is to be joined with those things that are in an inverted order, and consequently to be disjoined from the "Natural" The "Natural" refers to the external level of the human mind. represented by Pharaoh. For whatever is joined with things in an inverted order is disjoined from things in proper order. The reason "remembering" is conjunction is because, in the next life, the memory of someone joins people together. As soon as a spirit remembers another person, that person is made present—and so present that they may talk together. Because of this, angels and spirits can find everyone they have known or heard about, see them present, and speak with them whenever the Lord allows them to remember them (see no. 1114).
5230. Pharaoh was angry with his servants. This signifies when the "Natural" turned itself away. This is clear from the explanations provided above in nos. 5080 and 5081, where similar words appear.
5231. And he put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard. This signifies rejection by those things which are primary to interpretation. This also follows from the explanations above in nos. 5083 and 5084, where similar words were discussed.
5232. Me and the chief baker. This signifies both sensory parts [the intellectual and the voluntary]...
