I published my theory original: "Hypothesis" of fire and flame about eleven years ago in Observation 16, pages 103, 104, and 105 of my Micrographia. This theory has become so well-accepted original: "so far obtained" that many authors have since used and supported it, and I have not yet encountered any significant objection against it.
Therefore, it is not my purpose now to discuss or further explain that theory; I have no doubt that anyone who investigates it closely will find enough evidence to be convinced. Instead, I intend to mention some enjoyable and beneficial applications of it. I will also suggest some mechanical inventions original: "contrivances" for supplying the fuel original: "Pabulum" - Latin for food or sustenance—oil or spirits—at the same rate original: "by the same Degrees" at which it is consumed by the lamp's flame, which acts as a powerful solvent original: "dissolvent".
I do not intend here to show a way to make a perpetual lamp, as that is a fantasy original: "Chimera" which my theory of flame seems to disprove. This is because the substance being dissolved original: "dissolvend" - the fuel intended to be consumed must, in time, be completely consumed. Instead, my goal is to show a way to make
