These tables have been cross-referenced and compared with various examples, both in manuscript and printed form. They are to be used as follows: Suppose the student wishes to discover the properties of the hour from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on a Tuesday. First, look in the "Table of the Planetary Hours" [on the previous page]. Having found the hour marked "1" in the column titled "Hours from Midnight to Midnight," the student will see the figure "8" on the same line in the column titled "Hours from Sunset to Sunset," showing it to be the eighth hour of the day. In the column titled "Tuesday," the name "Mars" appears, showing that this hour is under the dominion of the planet Mars.
Upon consulting the "Table of the Magical Names of the Hours," the student will find the name Beron under the number 1. In the "Tuesday" column on the same line, the name of the angel Zamael appears, showing that the ruler of the hour is the Angel Zamael and that its magical name is Beron. Furthermore, by referring to the third table [on this page], the student will see that Tuesday is under the rule of the planet Mars, whose Archangel is Khamael, Angel is Zamael, metal is iron, and color is red.
Similarly, it will be found that the hour from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday is the sixth hour of the night and is under the dominion of the Sun. Its magical name is Cäerra, and the Angel Michael rules it. Saturday itself is under the dominion of the Archangel Tzaphqiel, the Angel Cassiel, and the planet Saturn; the metal lead and the color black are associated with it.
The following text is taken from the following manuscripts These refer to specific historical documents held in the British Library., which have been cross-referenced and compared with each other:
Sloane MSS. 1307; Sloane MSS. 3091; Harleian MSS. 3981; Additional MSS. 10862; King’s MSS. 288; Lansdowne MSS. 1202.
Extracts have also been made from Lansdowne MSS. 1203, which differs considerably from the others in its general arrangement, though it contains very similar subject matter.
In cases where the manuscripts varied from each other, I have chosen the version that seemed most likely to be correct, occasionally mentioning the different readings in footnotes. I have also corrected the Hebrew names in the incantations, for these were sometimes so distorted as to be hardly recognizable; for example, "Zenard" was often written instead of Tzabaoth original: "Zenard, written for Tzabaoth." Tzabaoth is a Hebrew title for God meaning "of Hosts.", and so on.
