...would have brought useless labor to us,¹ and useless tedium to all those readers who might not have much curiosity to know in how many places the discrepancies of G Gfrörer's 19th-century edition. from the first edition (= P) and from A The 1598 Zetzner edition. derive from changes or corrections by Gfrörer himself, and in how many others they correspond with the variants of A² The 1609 Zetzner edition. or A³ The 1651 Zetzner edition. or A¹ + A³ (= B). But we wish to serve even the most curious readers well, and for their sake we add here the list of places where the readings of G coincide with those of the editions we omitted in our notes:
p. 7, 12 price original: pretium A³ || 9, 6 never original: nunquam A³ || 11 never original: nunquam B || 12 ever original: unquam A³ || 14, 13 weariness original: taedium B || 17, 16 most precious original: pretiosissimum A³ || 20, 14 but itself original: autem se (without punctuation) A³ || 27, 18 Metaphysical original: Metaphysicum A³ || 29, 2 (Enthymematic original: Enthimematicam A²:) Enthymematic original: Enthymematicam A³ || 30, 3 ever original: unquam B || 20 because original: quia B || 31, 1 themselves original: ipsae A³ || 32, 3 of the Philosophers original: Philosophorum B || 9 they adopt original: adsciscant B || 15 and of the others original: caeterorumque B || 26 of the matter original: negotii A³ || 33, 9 of homonymy original: homonymiae B || 34, 5 light, darkness original: lux, tenebrae B || 8 (Or original: A or PA:) Or original: Aut B || 35, 6 etc. categories etc. original: categoriae etc. B || 44, 22 (VII PAA²:) IV A³ || 52, 6 metaphorical original: metaphoricum B || 53, 15 (justice original: iusticiam A²:) justice original: justitiam A³ || 57, 19 they represent original: repraesentant B || 59, 22 and 23 quidditatively original: quidditative — a technical term in Scholasticism meaning "pertaining to the essence of a thing" A³ || 66, 6 justice original: justitia A³ || 69, 10 of things differing original: differentium A³ || 72, 13 capable of laughter original: risibile B || 19 uncertain original: incertum B || 77, 21 etc. corrected numbers A³ || 78, 29 inanimate original: inanimatum B || 79, 15 (just as original: tam quam A²:) just as original: tanquam A³ || 80, 17 metaphorical original: metaphoricae B || 82, 24 by discourse original: discursu A³.
These are, as can be seen, for the most part orthographic trifles original: quisquilie ortografiche — minor spelling differences, insufficient even to rigorously demonstrate which of the three Lullian editions Gfrörer used as the basis for his reprint. It is probable, in any case, that he used the third (A³), with which he more often agrees; nor do the few discrepancies we have noted (for example p. 40, 12 'Fourteenth' original: Quartodecimo PAA¹G: 'Fourteenth' original: Decimoquarto A³; 83, 27 'more suitable' original: accommodatius PB: 'more suitable' original: accomodatius AG etc.),
¹ Naturally, neither of these two editions avoids new errors; we cite as an example p. 30, 25 sixfold original: sextuplex A³; 55, 4 (error in PA:) error original: errore A²A³; 63, 19 uttered original: prolatam A³; 70, 3 Themistius original: Themestius — an ancient Greek philosopher and commentator A²; 72, 28 etc. as to what is unique to Fire original: ut quid Ignis proprium A³ etc. Elsewhere the errors of PA are only half-corrected: for example 28, 9 and 82, 1 Enthymemes original: Enthimemata and in the Metaphysics original: Methaphysicisque A²A³.
