Mechelen is a city in the Low Countries, modern-day Belgium, where Dodoens served as a prominent physician.

The printer's device of Christophe Plantin. An oval frame contains a coastal landscape with a town, mountains, and ships. A hand reaches down from clouds in the center, holding a pair of compasses (dividers) that is drawing a circle on the ground. The border of the oval is inscribed with the motto "BY CONSTANCY AND LABOR" original: "CONSTANTIA ET LABORE". The frame is decorated with scrolls and two cherubic figures at the top.
