An engraved heraldic bookplate shows the coat of arms belonging to the Earl of Bute. The central shield features a checkerboard pattern known in heraldry as a fess chequy. Above the shield sits an earl’s coronet and a helmet with decorative foliage. A lion standing on its hind legs serves as the crest at the top. The shield is held up by a horse on the left side and a stag on the right side. A scroll containing a motto is positioned at the bottom.
