Zhang Zhongjing The "Sage of Medicine," c. 150–219 CE states: For women suffering from uterine leakage, persistent bleeding after a miscarriage, or bleeding during pregnancy, the Ass-hide Glue and Mugwort Decoction Jiao Ai Tang is the primary treatment. Use two ounces of Ass-hide Glue Ejiao, three ounces of Mugwort leaf, two ounces each of Sichuan Lovage Chuanxiong and Licorice, and three ounces each of Angelica Danggui and Rehmannia. Add four ounces of Peony. Boil in five pints of water and five pints of clear wine until three pints remain. Add the glue to melt it completely. For fetal movement during pregnancy, waist pain, "rushing at the heart," persistent bleeding, or cases where the fetus has died in the womb: use moxibustion. For fetal movement with severe nausea: boil one chicken-egg-sized piece of mugwort in four pints of strong vinegar and four pints of wine until two pints remain; divide into two doses. Postpartum Abdominal Pain

For those on the verge of death due to pain caused by catching a cold after childbirth: take two pounds of aged Qizhou Mugwort Artemisia argyi from Qizhou, the highest quality variety, dry it by a fire, and crush it. Spread it upon a mattress and cover it with a layer of silk. Use a warming iron over it. Once the scent of the mugwort emerges from the patient's mouth, the "cold energy" will depart along with the mugwort's essence, and the abdominal pain will naturally cease. For persistent uterine bleeding: take a chicken-egg-sized piece of "hot" (charred) mugwort, half an ounce of stir-fried Ass-hide Glue powder, and one mace approx. 3.7g of dried ginger. Boil the mugwort in five cups of water until reduced to two and a half cups. Remove the mugwort, melt the glue into the liquid, and divide into three doses to be finished in one day. If one suddenly vomits a mouthful or two of blood, or suffers from heart-nosebleeds or internal collapse: boil three clumps of processed mugwort in five pints of water until two remain, then drink. (Another formula exists).

Red, Swollen, and Painful Eyes

Burn mugwort to create smoke and cover it with a basin. Once the smoke is exhausted, scrape the soot from the basin and mix it with warm water to wash the eyes; it heals immediately. Adding Coptis Huanglian makes it even more effective. From: Doumen Formulas

Facial Discoloration and Tattoos

Take three pints each of mugwort ash and mulberry ash. Leach them with water to obtain a lye, repeating three times. Tie a five-colored cloth in the middle as before. Women's Facial Sores

Known as "Powder-Flower Sores." Use five mace of lead powder Dingfen mixed with rapeseed oil on a clay plate. Use one or two clumps of mugwort to smoke it. When the smoke is gone, place the plate on the ground overnight. Remove it the next morning and apply the mixture. It leaves no scars and is excellent for regenerating flesh. Facial Warts

Fungal Infection of the Palms

Take four or five ounces of high-quality fresh mugwort. Boil in four or five pans of water for six or seven vigorous boils. Pour into a wide-mouthed jar and tie two layers of hemp cloth over the top. Boils and Toxic Swelling

Take a large load of mugwort and wormwood, burn to ash, and place in a bamboo tube. Leach with water to obtain the juice. Mix two portions with lime until it reaches the consistency of paste. First, prick the sore with a needle until it is painful, then apply the medicine three times. The root of the boil will be pulled out naturally. Han Guang of Yushan used this to treat people with miraculous success. In the early Zhenguan era 627–649 CE, Governor Xu of Quzhou sought out this formula and successfully treated over thirty people. Early-Stage Hemorrhoids

For those not yet formed and for various heat-swells: apply wet paper to the area. The first spot to dry is the "head" of the swelling. Apply moxibustion there. Regardless of the number of cones, if it is painful, continue until it is not; if it is not painful, continue until it is. The toxin will naturally disperse. If the mouth of the sore is cold and stagnant, wash it with a decoction of Northern Mugwort. For a bone stuck in the throat: take raw mugwort and wormwood, extract the juice, and boil one gallon of the liquid mixed with wine until four pints remain. Sip slowly; the bone should pass. Wind-Toothache

Melt a little wax and spread it on paper. Layer mugwort on top and roll it with a bamboo shoot sheath into a tube. Light it and use the smoke to fumigate the nostrils and cheeks according to the side of the pain. Fill the mouth with the smoke and then exhale. This stops the pain and eliminates the swelling.
