We, Brother NICOLAS FOUCQUEREL, Provincial of the Order of Minims A religious order founded by St. Francis of Paola, known for their extreme humility and "minimal" lifestyle in the Province of France,
Having noted the license of our Most Reverend Father JOSEPH GASCH, our General, granted to the Reverend Father Charles Plumier—a Priest of the same Institute and Province, and a Theologian and Royal Botanist—to commit to the press all the Works he has at hand, provided they are diligently examined and approved by two theologians of our Province; by the tenor of these Presents, we name the very Reverend Fathers René Thuillier and Jean-François Mangon, long-standing Professors of Sacred Theology and both former Provincials, to examine with perceptive eyes the New Genera of American Plants, so that, after observing all that the law requires, they may be brought to light more quickly. Given in our Royal Parisian Convent at the Place Royale Now the Place des Vosges; the Minims had a famous monastery and library there, under our hand-signed mark and the Seal of our Provincial Office, this seventh day of April in the year 1703.
Place † of the Seal.
We, the undersigned Theologians of the Order of Minims in the Province of France, by commission of the very Reverend Father, Father Nicolas Foucquerel, Provincial of the same Province, have read and studied the Book titled: New Genera of American Plants, by the Author Reverend Father Charles Plumier, of the Order of Minims in the Province of France and Royal Botanist in the American Islands The Caribbean; in which we have seen and approved a diligent observation of American plants, a most accurate description of their genera, and a most exact discussion of their species. No doubt remains for us that it will be of the greatest utility for identifying botanical matters, as well as a source of delight for plant-lovers original: Botanophilis themselves; for which reason we have judged it worthy of the printing press and to be published as soon as possible. Given in this Parisian Convent of the Minims at the Place Royale, this twelfth day of April, the year 1703.
