LOUIS, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre: To our beloved and faithful Councilors, the members of our Courts of Parliament, Masters of Requests Ordinary of our Household, Bailiffs, Seneschals, Provosts, Judges, their Lieutenants, and to all our other Justiciaries and Officers whom it may concern; Greetings: Father CHARLES PLUMIER, Minim A member of the Order of Minims, a Catholic religious order known for their scientific and botanical contributions during the Enlightenment, having represented to us that he desires to have printed a small Work of his composition, entitled: New Genera of American Plants original: "Nova Plantarum Americanarum Genera"; if it would please us to grant him our necessary Letters for this purpose. We have permitted and granted, and by these Presents do permit and grant to him, to have printed by such Printer or Bookseller as he shall choose to select, the said Book, in such form, margin, typeface, and as many times as shall seem good to him, during the term of three consecutive years, counting from the day of the date of these Presents, and to have it sold and distributed throughout our Kingdom, on the condition that the printing shall be done within our Kingdom, and not elsewhere, on fine paper and in good typeface, in accordance with the Regulations of the Book Trade; that before exposing the Book for sale, two copies shall be placed in our public Library, another in the Cabinet of Books of our Palace of the Louvre, and one in that of our very dear and faithful Knight, Chancellor of France, the Lord Phelyppeaux, Count of Pontchartrain, Commander of our Orders, and that these Presents shall be registered in the Registers of the Community of Printers and Booksellers of Paris; all under penalty of nullity of the same. Regarding the contents of which, we command and enjoin you to allow the Petitioner, or those who shall have rights from him, to enjoy them fully and peacefully, ceasing and causing to cease all troubles and hindrances. We desire that to the Copy of these Presents which shall be printed at the beginning or at the end of said Book, faith be added as to the Original. We command our first Usher or Sergeant to perform for the execution of these Presents all notifications, prohibitions, seizures, and other required and necessary acts, without asking further permission, and notwithstanding any "hue and cry" original: "clameur de haro," an ancient Norman legal appeal, Norman charter, or Letters to the contrary; For such is our pleasure. Given at Versailles the seventeenth day of March in the year of Grace one thousand seven hundred and three, and of our Reign the sixtieth Louis XIV, the "Sun King," was in the 60th year of his exceptionally long reign.
