An ornate circular emblem flanked by two classical figures. On the left stands Minerva (Athena), the goddess of wisdom and war, wearing a plumed helmet and armor, holding a spear and leaning on a shield depicting an owl. On the right stands Mercury (Hermes), the messenger god and patron of travelers, nude but for a drape, wearing a winged hat and holding a caduceus (a staff entwined with snakes). The central medallion depicts a rocky island in the sea with a ship sailing nearby, topped by a nautical compass. The medallion is bordered by the motto "To virtue, nothing is impassable" original: "VIRTUTI NIHIL INVIUM". At the base of the scene are the initials "E·K·D·" (Engelbert Kaempfer, Doctor). A small signature "F.W.B. made this" original: "F.W.B. fecit" appears at the bottom left of the engraving.
