For this very reason, I have used sparingly

understood by those persons who are
not initiated in the study of
natural history; and when it has been
necessary for me to use them with some frequency,
I have placed them at the bottom of the page,
accompanying them with the English phrases or definitions
original: "frases ó definiciones latinas". The author provided scientific descriptions in Latin at the foot of his pages; these have been translated into English for this edition.
