We sought a man suitable for sketching the descriptions of plants, and at last we have encountered a man as learned as he is diligent, Theodoor Janson van Almeloveen, Doctor of Medicine. Almeloveen (1657–1712) was a celebrated Dutch physician and classical scholar. Once a most pleasing pupil, he is now a sincere friend: burning with a love for this extraordinary botanical work, he has gladly taken that care upon himself; for the rest, we leave the remaining matters to be arranged and perfected in this Garden original: "Horto"; referring to the Hortus Medicus in Amsterdam to him. From his erudition and tireless diligence, one ought to hope for all good things. Farewell.
