Psellus, who wrote accurately, though he was not called
A stammerer original: "ψελλός", but rather the varied gifts of the sacred Muses,
Remained in darkness for a long time; this man Gaulmin 1,
By interpreting him, brought him into the light.
And he who barely reached the measure of glorious youth,
Possesses the boundless glory of all kinds of wisdom,
Not only pursuing the surpassing wealth of learning
Of Italy and Greece, but also that of the East 2,
A storehouse of all knowledge (a wonder to behold),
And like a new Helicon, here the Pierides
Sing in a chorus the sound of his god-inspired song,
Being warmed and sitting upon his lips.
1) He would have written "Gaulminos" better.
2) Gaulmin was particularly illustrious for his knowledge of oriental languages.
