To the most Reverend and most Serene Prince and Lord, Christian Albert, heir of Norway, postulated coadjutor of the bishopric of Lübeck, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, and Dithmarschen, Count in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, etc.
The printer’s labors were drawing to an end, and as I looked about, or perhaps doubted, as to which illustrious frontispiece I might adorn this reborn booklet with, it seemed an opportune moment to honor the memory of your most Reverend Serenity’s impending birthday festivities and the most glorious anniversary celebration with my humblest devotion and this very inscription.
The annals of all peoples declare that the rite of birthday festivals is most ancient and to be traced back to the very births of the world itself; and this topic is pursued at greater length by Marcellus Donatus in his Clarifications on Suetonius Tranquillus' Tiberius, chapter 5; Gruterus in Annotations on Seneca, p. 753; and Rosinus in Roman Antiquities.
