if they do not coincide. A certain breadth or space is then left between the middle [line] and the table [line], which we call the quadrangle or table of the hand. And the end of this space, which tends toward the back of the hand, is called the percussion when it approaches the mount of the little finger. Know, however, that its name changes; for in that place, a different significance is effected, differing from the first. For there, a few small fissures appear at its setting, which signify the bites of dogs. Similarly, the space contiguous to this, which descends outside the triangle as far as the joint of the hand, some call the mount of the hand, but others, the fatness of the hand—and not by the name of a mount. We, however, shall name it the mount of the moon, since certain fissures or lines are found on it [signifying] navigation and the variety of fortune in aquatic matters, according to the goodness or malice of the lines themselves; and because the moon presides over the waters, this mount will rightly be reckoned the moon’s, whose figure will be as follows: ☾. The third space is that which is near to this, enclosed by three lines: namely, the middle line, the line of life, and that which we have called the base of the triangle. This, situated in the middle of the hand, we judge ought to be called the triangle of Mars, whose sign is as follows: ♂. We shall, however, designate the hand containing all the aforementioned things at the beginning of this work more fittingly when we shall have begun to arrange all matters item by item in the diverse signs that can be seen in the hand of man. But first, I shall set down everything in writing so that the lines situated in the hand may be understood more easily. We shall divide this hand into five parts in order to follow the order with respect to the fingers and their mounts, and into six other parts with respect to the lines that can be seen in the hand.
