The Key of Solomon

I call them Celestial Creatures, some of whom are destined
to Rule the Stars, some to inhabit the Elements,
others to guide & help men &
others to continually sing the praises of the
Lord: you can therefore, by means of their seals
& characters, make them familiar to you, provided that you
do not abuse them by demanding things from them that
are contrary to their nature, for cursed is he who takes
the name of God in vain & who misuses the
Sciences & the goods with which He has enriched us. I
command you, my Son, to engrave well in your memory
everything I tell you so that it never leaves you, or
at least, I order you that if you have no intention of
making good use of the secrets I teach you, to
rather throw this Testament into the fire than to abuse the
power you will have to constrain the Spirits; for
I warn you that these beneficent Angels, fatigued
& weary by your illicit demands, could, to
your misfortune, execute the Orders of God, as
well as to the misfortune of all those who, ill-intentioned,
would abuse the secrets that it pleased Him to give
& reveal to me. Do not believe, however, My Son, that
it is not permitted for you to profit from the goods & pleasures

that the divine Spirits can provide for you; on the contra-
ry, it is for them a very great pleasure to render
service to man, with whom many of these Spirits
have much inclination & affinity, God
having destined them for the preservation & conduct of
earthly things which are subject to the power of
man.

THERE are different kinds of Spirits, according to the
things over which they preside: there are those who re-
gulate the Empyrean Heaven The highest part of heaven, believed in ancient cosmology to be the realm of pure fire and the abode of God., others the Primum Mobile The "first moved" sphere in the Ptolemaic system, which carries all other celestial spheres.,
others the first & second Crystalline Spheres of clear "waters" located between the fixed stars and the Empyrean., others
the Starry Heaven; there are also Spirits in the Heaven of
Saturn whom I name Saturnites; there are
Jovial Spirits of Jupiter., Martial Spirits of Mars., Solar, Venerean Spirits of Venus. &
Lunar, & Mercurial Spirits; there are also some in the
Elements as well as in the Heavens; there are some in
the Region of Fire, others in the Air, others
in the Water & others on the Earth, all of whom can
render service to the man who has the good fortune
to know them & to know how to attract them. I wish
further to make known to you that God has destined for
each person a Spirit who watches over and takes care of our
