It is the opinion not only of the ancient Rabbis and all the Hebrew scholars original: "scavans hebreuse", but also of our own Doctors Theologians or learned church authorities, that besides the Law which was given by the Lord God upon the mountain, they received also a double Law: the one literal and the other spiritual. This literal Law was written by the command of God to be communicated to the people; but as for the spiritual Law, God forbade it to be used openly, but only that it be communicated to the seventy scholars who had been chosen by Moses by the Command of God.
