original: "EPIST. NVNCVPATORIA"
Those things which he attained through constant study of letters, through tireless labors, and through the wisdom and experience of a long life—these precepts of Medicine, most beneficial to students—he has joined together so aptly in this small bundle and bound with such a treaty, that you might doubt (judging the matter more closely) whether it could have been done with greater skill. Looking out for life in a threefold way with these three little books—although each retains its own honor separately and without the other—yet one so takes up the defense of the other's parts, that it would be safer original: "διαμάχεσθαι γυμνόν τε καὶ άπλήλιον" (to fight naked and without the sun/protection) to fight unprotected than to have dissolved the framework and the knot of their fellowship. To these is added original: "τούτοις ἐπιγίνετ’" a Book on diseases spreading everywhere, no less useful than the others for protecting good health, which we decided should be added as a supplement auctarium: an additional gift or increase, fearing lest that which he brought forth for the benefit of the world with such industry might be swallowed up by time, the devourer of things.
Truly, I refrain from saying how much of our midnight oil was exhausted in restoring this author to his former dignity. He who compares our work with the old versions will easily perceive upon which cancers and ulcers we have induced scars; let the judgment rest with him. Most Illustrious Count, you occurred to me not only as one worthy to whom I might dedicate these small works, but you seemed clearly suited, as I have found that as soon as you obtain any leisure, you will gladly spend it all in reading of this kind. Indeed, you excel in letters to such an extent that if anyone favors more refined humanity, he should think you truly to be congratulated—
