Documentary Account of the German Union

A friendly hand has been so kind as to send me a printed sheet addressed to the friends of Reason, Truth, and Virtue. I cannot describe this sheet as anything other than the outlines original: "Lineamente" of a grand design. Since everyone who receives notice of this sheet is permitted to express their views on it, I am writing down my opinion as openly and impartially as is ever allowed for an honest man under such circumstances.

It is irrefutably true that forces eternally struggle against forces in both physical and spiritual nature. Whoever knows the human heart and history knows that the striving for superiority—or, what amounts to the same thing, the feeling of one's own strength—has been the great mainspring original: "Springfeder" of all human action and impact from the very beginning. The weak person is always the poorest on earth; and one is always weak when standing alone on one's own small stage, and
