In the first part, Bread original: "Panis"; easily the foremost form of nourishment; is dissected by the edge of fire This refers to chemical or alchemical analysis through heat.; its elements and their hidden properties are examined.
In the two following parts, Man original: "Homo", who excels in the dignity of nourishment Fludd suggests humans are the highest form of "consumer" or "nurtured being" in the cosmic hierarchy., is treated by a two-fold anatomical section, namely either:
- Common or visible
- Mystical or invisible

A decorative woodcut emblem or printer's mark. In the center, an oval frame depicts a knight in armor brandishing a sword while riding a horse through a landscape with a city in the background. The border of the oval is inscribed with the motto "FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT" original Latin: "BONAM MILITIAM MILITA"; a biblical reference to 1 Timothy 1:18.. The frame is embellished with architectural strapwork and figures. At the base of the knight's pedestal are the initials "E. K." (Erasmus Kempffer).
