A detailed woodcut coat of arms belonging to the author. The central element is a shield containing a tall, tapered vessel or altar bound with ropes. Inscribed on this vessel are the words "ALTAR" and "OF CAPNIO" original: "ARACAP NIONIS", referring to Ara Capnionis. "Capnio" was Reuchlin's scholarly pseudonym—a Greek translation of his German name, which relates to the word for "smoke.". Above the shield sits a closed helmet in profile, decorated with a small cross. The crest atop the helmet consists of a spiked breaking wheel The symbol of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of philosophers and scholars, which contains within it a smaller wheel or circle with a cross. The entire shield and helmet are surrounded by ornate, flourishing leaf-like mantling.
