16. On the Philosophical Lead. Philosophical Lead: Not ordinary lead (plumbum), but a specific substance or state of matter—often associated with Saturn—believed to be the "seed" or starting point of the Great Work.
17. Avicenna’s seven rules from which the Philosopher’s Stone is composed. Avicenna (Ibn Sina, c. 980–1037) was a Persian polymath. Although he was skeptical of some alchemical claims, many Latin treatises on the Stone were attributed to him in the Middle Ages.

20. The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, father of Philosophers. The "Tabula Smaragdina" is a legendary cryptic text said to contain the secret of the "one substance." It is the source of the famous maxim "As above, so below."
