No ambition drove me to undertake this responsibility original: "Provinciam", literally a "province" or "jurisdiction," used here to mean a specific duty or assigned task; for I have always held a retired life original: "Umbraticam vitam," literally a "life in the shadows," referring to the quiet, shaded life of a scholar as opposed to the "heat" of public life, removed from all noise and clamor, in the highest regard. This, indeed, was my only intention: that as far as it lies within me, I might promote scholarship original: "rem literariam," often called the "Republic of Letters," the international community of intellectuals and their shared knowledge. When I first began this Work, I had no intention of sharing it with the literary World; I gathered it together for my own use alone. But now, at the encouragement of men renowned for their learning, I release it to the public. Indeed, when I observed how eagerly people seize upon the Acts of the Learned original: "Acta Eruditorum," one of the earliest and most influential scientific journals, established in Leipzig in 1682, and other books of that kind—
