The term "invention" refers to the original artistic composition and creative design. Bernard Picart (1673–1733) was a French engraver whose illustrations for this series revolutionized the study of world religions.

Picart was French, but he adopted the epithet "le Romain" (the Roman) to signify his artistic style or perhaps to distinguish himself from his father, Etienne.

DAVID HERRLIBERGUER. David Herrliberger (1697–1777) was a prominent Swiss publisher and engraver based in Zurich.

An ornate engraved printer's device or emblem. In the center is a shield containing a radiant sun with a face, positioned above a pedestal. Crossed behind the pedestal are artistic tools, likely a palette with brushes and an engraving burin. The shield is framed by intricate symmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and floral garlands.
