PLATE XII. No. 1. Consecration of the Great Cross, where the Bishop delivers a sermon in the presence of the Clergy, and where, after three tapers have been lit at the foot of the cross by an Acolyte, the Bishop offers his prayer. No. 2. Incensing of the cross, which takes place at its consecration after three lit tapers have been placed at the top and on the two arms of the cross. No. 3. The Baptism of a Bell, which is performed by sprinkling, washing, rubbing, and anointing, while the Bishop and Clergy sing and offer their prayers. In this historical tradition, bells were "baptized" with water, oil, and salt, and even given godparents and names. No. 4. Blessing of the Bell, which is consecrated in the name of the Holy Trinity and given the name of a Saint. No. 5. The Incensing of the Bell, using a censer placed beneath the suspended bell. No. 6. Consecration of an Image, performed by naming the Saint it represents, by sprinkling, and—if it is an image of the Virgin—by a triple incensing, songs, prayers, and signs of the Cross, etc.

PLATE XIII. No. 1. The Holy Shroud, in which the body of Our Lord was reportedly wrapped, as it is kept in Besançon in Burgundy and shown to the people at Easter. No. 2 & 3. The same Holy Shroud, kept in Turin, seen from the front and the back.

PLATE XIV. No. 1. Blessing of the Sacerdotals Sacerdotals: The specialized vestments and garments worn by a priest during a service., which only the Bishop has the authority to perform. No. 2. Blessing of a new small cross. No. 3. Adoration of said cross, which is then kissed by the Celebrant and all the Clergy present. No. 4. Blessing of the Sun or Ciborium. The "Sun" refers to an ostensorium or monstrance, used to display the Host, which often has a sunburst shape. No. 5. Blessing of a Man of War, to whom the Bishop gives a sword sprinkled with holy water, and with which he then girds him after striking him three times lightly on the shoulder, exhorting him to be a soldier of peace, etc. No. 6. Blessing of a Flag by the sign of the cross, the sprinkling of holy water, etc.

PLATE XV. No. 1. The Consecration of Salt and Water, to bless the first stone of a Church that is to be built. No. 2. Blessing of the Ground where the Church is to be built. No. 3. The Bishop goes to lay the first stone. No. 4. The Bishop blesses the foundations of the Church. No. 5. The Bishop sprinkles the exterior of the Church. No. 6. The Bishop makes the sign of the Cross at the Door of the Church.

PLATE XVI. No. 1. The Bishop writes the Alphabet with his crosier on the Cross of Ashes made by the Sub-Deacon. This ancient ritual involves the Bishop writing the Greek and Latin alphabets in a diagonal cross of ashes on the floor to symbolize the instruction of the faithful in the faith. No. 2. Figure of the Cross of Ashes as traced on the pavement of the new Church. No. 3. The Bishop makes the Cross with holy water in the center of the Altar. No. 4. The Bishop sprinkles the Pavement of the Church with holy water. No. 5. The Relics are carried in procession into the Church. No. 6. The Bishop encloses the Relics within the Altar.

PLATE XVII. No. 1. The Bishop anoints the twelve crosses on the walls with Holy Chrism. Twelve crosses are often painted or carved on the walls of a consecrated church to represent the twelve Apostles. No. 2. He makes a Cross on the front of the Altar. No. 3. He blesses the Vessels that will serve at the Altar. No. 4. He pours Oil and Chrism onto the Altar Table. No. 5. He lights the five wax crosses placed upon the five crosses of incense. No. 6. He consecrates the Ornaments of the Altar.

PLATE XVIII. The virtues of the Agnus Dei. Agnus Dei: Literally "Lamb of God"; here referring to a wax medallion blessed by the Pope. A. An exact copy of the printed sheet that the Pope gives with the Agnus Dei, which is a type of wax medal representing a lamb, as seen at Letter B. This medal has the image of a Saint on the reverse. C. The Coat of Arms of Pope Alexander VII, who provided the original of the aforementioned sheet A. D. The Scapular. A garment worn by members of religious orders or as a lay devotional object. E. The Rosary, or chaplet composed of fifteen decades of beads. F. An ordinary Rosary enriched with Relics. G. A Ring used by the Knights of Malta to say their Rosaries: the Rose at the top turns on a spring and marks, with a small black dot on the 10 figures around it, the number of said decades or parts of the rosary. H. One of these parts, or decades of the Rosary. I. Bread of Saint Genevieve, a type of small dry biscuit distributed by the monks of Saint Genevieve for the fever. K.
