...could find; I knew nothing of it either, as is the way of the laity in their simplicity: I sought only the heart of Jesus Christ original: JEsu Christi, to hide myself therein from the grim wrath of God and the attacks of the devil, and I prayed to God earnestly for His Holy Spirit and grace, that He would bless and lead me in Himself, and take from me whatever turned me away from Him, and to surrender myself entirely to Him; so that I might live not according to my own will, but His, and that He alone might lead me, and I might be His child in His Son Jesus Christ.

And how he was enlightened through manifold ways,

In such very earnest seeking and desiring of mine (in which I suffered violent obstacles original: Anstöße, referring to spiritual or psychological struggles and opposition, yet I would rather have risked my life than given up or desisted from it), the gate was opened to me, so that in one quarter of an hour I saw and knew more than if I had been for many years at the high schools original: hohen Schulen, referring to universities, at which I wondered so greatly that I knew not what was happening to me, and thereupon turned my heart to the praise of God.
