Therefore, the seven penitential psalms Penitential Psalms: A traditional collection of seven psalms (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143) used in Christian liturgy to express sorrow for sin. and all psalms that plead for the forgiveness of sins following self-complaint should be heard. The first is a plea against evil, whether future or present; the second, however, is a desire and request for what is good.
The second type of prayer or praying that Paul writes about is called petitioning for something good. Just as the first part referring to "Deprecation" or "Abbitten" discussed previously involves pleading for the removal of transgression and punishment, and asking that we be delivered or protected from evil, misfortune, and all the malice of Satan—so this second part is a request that every good thing may happen to us. This includes a longing desire for God's grace, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the knowledge of Christ, divine wisdom, strength, faith, and eternal salvation. In this, we pray for what we lack spiritually or physically, while reminding God the Lord of His goodness, love, faithfulness, truth, and promised mercy. We persist and urge Him that, for the sake of these attributes and His own promises, He would not refuse our request.
We have an example of this in the previously mentioned Psalm 143, where the Prophet prays and asks:
Lord, let me hear your grace early, for I hope in you. Make known to me the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you. Deliver me, my God, from my enemies, for I have taken refuge in you. Teach me to do according to your pleasure, for you are my God. Let your good spirit lead me on a level path.
