as a warning to posterity and as a mirror for thousands, in which they might see themselves. Jesus, the friend of humanity and a profound knower of the human heart original: "Menschenkenner"—a term describing someone with deep psychological insight into human nature, certainly attempted everything to save this unfortunate disciple. To him, the treasury Cassa: the communal money-box or purse held by the disciples was entrusted, from which not only the needs of the company were paid, but many poor people were also supported. There he had the best opportunity to accustom himself to necessary expenditures, to learn contentment original: "Genügsamkeit", the virtue of being satisfied with what one has, to gain the wholesome experience of how little a human truly needs, and especially to taste the divine joys of doing good. This was a visible proof of Jesus's foresight and wisdom, as he intended to prevent Judas's failing and, through constant habit, to encourage his gradual progress in virtue. However, Judas made a poor application of this; out of self-interest and greed, he stole from the treasury, and with every repeated act of this kind, he strengthened his flaw until it became a dominant vice. Jesus did not then fail to provide hints, exhortations, and warnings.
"Beware," he once said, "of greed, for no one's life This is a reference to the Gospel of Luke 12:15: "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
