The exterior of this volume features a bindingThe protective cover of a book, consisting of the boards and the spine. crafted from dark brown leather along the spine and decorative paper on the front and back covers. The leather spine is reinforced with raised horizontal bands, which were traditionally used to cover the cords where the pages are sewn together. A small, red leather title label is affixed to the spine, bordered with intricate gold-tooled decorationA process where gold leaf is pressed into the leather using heated brass stamps. in a zig-zag pattern.
The gilt-stamped text on the label has faded significantly over time, leaving only a few fragments of what was likely a formal title in Latin:
original: "-NUM"; a common Latin suffix for nouns or adjectives.
original: "-UM"; a Latin grammatical ending.
The front cover is finished with marbled paperPaper decorated with multicolored, swirling patterns that resemble marble stone. in a "snail" or "curl" pattern. This design displays vibrant swirls of light blue, ochre yellow, and terracotta red-brown. Such decorative papers were a popular and elegant choice for high-quality bookbindings in the 18th and 19th centuries.
