original: Εἰ δὴ θεῖον ὁ νοῦς πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον, καὶ ὁ κατὰ τοῦτον βίος, θεῖος πρὸς τὸν ἀνθρώπινον βίον· χρὴ δὲ οὐ κατὰ τοὺς παραινοῦντας ἀνθρώπινα φρονεῖν ἀνθρώπους ὄντας, ἀλλ’ ἐφ’ ὅσον ἐνδέχεται, ἀθανατίζειν, καὶ ἅπαντα ποιεῖν πρὸς τὸ ζῆν κατὰ τὸ κράτιστον τῶν ἐν ἡμῖν.
If the mind is divine in comparison with man, then the life lived according to the mind is divine in comparison with human life. We should not follow those who advise us that, because we are human, we should think only of human things; rather, as far as possible, we should strive to be immortal and do everything to live according to the highest part within us.
original: Ἡ δὲ τελεία εὐδαιμονία ὅτι θεωρητική τίς ἐστιν ἐνέργεια, καὶ ἐντεῦθεν ἂν φανείη, ὅτι τοὺς θεοὺς μάλιστα ὑπειλήφαμεν μακαρίους καὶ εὐδαίμονας εἶναι· οὐδὲ γὰρ ᾗ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν, οὕτω βιώσεταί τις, ἀλλ’ ᾗ θεῖόν τι ἐν αὐτῷ ὑπάρχει.
That perfect happiness is a kind of contemplative activity would appear from this: that we suppose the gods to be especially blessed and happy. For a person will not live this way insofar as he is a human being, but insofar as something divine exists within him.
