Valentin Andreä belongs so truly to our own era that in many, many things I wish we had an Andreä now. Undeniably, the rays of the Enlightenment Enlightenment (Aufklärung): the 18th-century intellectual movement that emphasized reason, science, and individual rights over traditional authority have greatly increased over the last century; individual people in all social ranks think well and finely and rationally. However, the old scaffolding of prejudices, of abuses, and of corruptions in all affairs and social classes still stands in many lands and provinces of Germany just as it did in the days of the good Andreä
