(*) it is held against him as a fault that he occasionally indulged in rather long and somewhat tangential digressions. Yet, the sometimes unbelievable conjectures brought forward do not diminish the value of the Ancient Germany original: "Germania antiqua" by Philipp Clüver term: "Philippus Cluverius" | A 17th-century scholar regarded as the founder of historical geography., nor that of so many other works by learned men which are highly esteemed and read with profit by everyone. Nor are the writings of [John] Selden term: "Seldenus" | A renowned English jurist and polymath whose vast works on ancient law and history were essential to 17th-century scholarship. any less eagerly pored over by scholars, even though one may notice frequent wanderings in them as well; yet any boredom these might cause the more curious reader is easily brushed away by the excellence and abundance of his observations.
I am therefore quite convinced that these Gods of the Ancient Germans original: "Deos veterum Germanorum", described by the posthumous pen of Schedius and unearthed from Antiquity, will provide a lasting testament to the Author’s genius and learning, just as I remember these verses inscribed upon a portrait of Selden:
