Having read attentively and with the necessary diligence the Historical-Critical Dissertation on the Ancient and New Manichaeans original: "Dissertationem Historico-Criticam de antiquis novisque Manichæis" by Lorenzo Alticozzi of Cortona, a member of the Society of Jesus—a man distinguished not only by the gravity of his character and his profession of the Religious Institute, but also by the books he has more than once published for the public utility and benefit—and having done so at the command of the Most Reverend Father Thomas Augustine Ricchini, Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace, I confess that I have found nothing in it that is repugnant to the sincere Religion of Christ our Lord or to the correct rules of morality. And if perhaps it might seem that the boundaries of Manichaeism A dualist heresy originating in the 3rd century; here, the author is likely applying the label to modern theological opponents to suggest they share the same errors. are stretched wider than is strictly proper by a somewhat loose use of the name, the studious Author nevertheless works toward that end led by his own reasons. For which reason, we are of the opinion that this same Dissertation may safely be published to the public through the art of the printers.
