I have read with an attentive mind the Historical-Critical Dissertation on the Ancient and New Manichaeans original: "Dissertationem Historico-Criticam de antiquis novisque Manichæis", written by the Very Reverend Father Lorenzo Alticozzi of Cortona, of the Society of Jesus original: "S. J." (Societatis Jesu). Alticozzi (1711–1777) was a prominent Jesuit polemicist., at the command of the Most Reverend Father Master of the Sacred Palace. In the explanation of the ancient false doctrine, in the discovery of its primary authors and the uncovering of its new supporters, and in the recitation of the Ecclesiastical and Imperial laws original: "Cæsareisque." This refers to the legal codes of the Roman Emperors (the Caesars), who heavily persecuted the Manichaeans in late antiquity. passed against those same dogmatists, the most diligent Author presents almost nothing that he has not drawn from the very sources themselves. For this reason, he has provided not only for the pleasure but especially for the benefit of those whose interest it is to know the history of the Church. Therefore, I judge that dissertation—which is in no way contrary to the Orthodox Faith or to good morals—to be worthy of the public light, provided that the permission for its publication is granted by those to whom it pertains.
