that from his childhood he was skilled in all Egyptian learning. This could not easily have been achieved without the help of literature original: "Literature," here referring to the art of writing or the use of letters, and we never read of any system of writing before the one invented by Hermes. Secondly, he is said by

himself to be the son of Saturn, and
* Sanchuniathon A legendary Phoenician author who supposedly lived before the Trojan War
by others to be the scribe of Saturn. Now Saturn, according to historians, lived in the time of Serug, Abraham's great-grandfather. I shall simply include the judgment of Suidas Suidas The Suda*, a massive 10th-century Byzantine encyclopedia of the Mediterranean world and rest satisfied that Hermes lived not only before, but long before, Moses. His words are these:
"I believe that Hermes Trismegistus, the Egyptian sage, flourished before Pharaoh." original Latin: "Credo Mercurium Trismegistum sapientem Egyptium floruisse ante Pharaonem"
