The Work that I offer to humanity is not a collection of conjectures; it is not a system In the 18th century, "system" often referred to the rigid, materialist philosophical frameworks of the Enlightenment, which Saint-Martin frequently critiqued. that I present to them; I believe I am giving them a more useful gift. It is not, however, Science original: "Science" — Here, Saint-Martin refers to "Divine Science" or the "Science of Man," a form of spiritual knowledge or gnosis, rather than modern empirical science. itself that I come to bring them: I know too well that it is not from man that man must expect it: it is only a ray of their own torch that I relight before them, so that it may enlighten them regarding the false ideas they have been given about Truth, as well as the weak and dangerous weapons that unsteady hands have employed to defend it.
I have been deeply moved, I confess, upon casting my eyes over the current state of Science; I have seen how misunderstandings have disfigured it; I have seen the hideous veil with which it has been covered; and for the sake of my fellow creatures, I believed it was my duty to tear it away.
No doubt for such an undertaking, I require more than ordinary resources;
