even if they held all spiritual as well as secular
authority here temporarily from God, they could
nonetheless have no more than God Himself has.
Since divine authority permits nothing more than a
single religion, and does not extend itself further,
so indeed Your Princely Serenity original: E. F. Durchl., an abbreviation for Euer Fürstlichen Durchlaucht. could also not
presume to do more; especially since the sword was
given to Your Princely Serenity, and you were called
to secular authority original: Weltliche Obrigkeit,
by such a sword Justice original: Justicia has been commanded and
entrusted to you, so that you are bound to administer
it without partiality, at the risk of losing your
salvation.
But Justice demands that to each person their own
be given and left to them, just as Christ indicated
with this statement: > And render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God’s. original: Et reddite quæ sunt Cæsaris Cæsari, & quæ sunt Dei, Deo.
Thus, right and wrong, or true and false
religion, cannot coexist in this matter original: Passu, any more than
the Prophet Elijah could permit such a thing,
who made his claim with these words: > "How long will you limp between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." original: Usq; quò claudicatis in duas partes? si Dominus est Deus, sequimini eum, si autem Baal, sequimini illum.
And therefore the holy Paul
alludes excellently to this resolution when he
says: > "What communion has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer with an unbeliever?" original: Quæ communio Christi ad Belial, aut quæ fidelis cum infideli?
This is so correct in its substance that both
the Old and New Testaments curse and damn those
who wish to keep company and have community
with various faiths; for that reason, the
greater part of the entire world was rooted out
by the Great Flood original: Sündenfluß; literally "Sin-flood.". Therefore, the holy John
concludes this point regarding Justice very well:
"Because you are neither cold nor hot, I will begin to vomit you out of my mouth." original: Quia neq; frigidus neq; calidus, incipiam te evomere ex ore meo.
