...that they may do this—which they cannot do, nor does it stand within their power—whereby they lay an unbearable burden upon their conscience, provided it does not happen openly or in writing. Whatever other motives might be brought before Your Princely Serenity by these politicians original: politicis and earthly Hungarian councilors to hold against God and the holy religion, I cannot know. But this I do know: that one should rather not only be poor, but even depart from and risk one’s life, before one should call good evil and evil good. For this reason, so many hundreds of thousands of martyrs are present in the Church, who all preferred to die and shed their blood rather than deny Christ and the true religion. For we are pledged and sworn to these points, and we cannot depart from them in any way, neither to the right nor to the left.
Regarding the pretended Political Peace: since it cannot be concluded except in such a way that one acts against God, burdens the conscience, and renounces eternal life, it is necessary above all things to know that we are no longer heathens, but Christians. Therefore, all peace must, above all things, be founded upon—and not against—Christ. For thus the prophet speaks of the political peace—
